Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

For those considering psychological support, your General Practitioner (GP) is an excellent first point of contact. Your GP can listen to your concerns and, if appropriate, assist in arranging a referral and Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) to facilitate access to psychology services.

Organising a GP Referral and Mental Health Care Plan enables clients to access Medicare rebates for up to 10 psychology sessions per calendar year.

Payment for therapy sessions is required in full at the time of your appointment. Following payment, we will promptly submit your Medicare rebate claim electronically on your behalf. Please ensure that your Medicare account has up-to-date bank details to facilitate the direct transfer of rebate funds to your nominated account.

Yes, clients are welcome to engage in psychology sessions privately without a referral. Private sessions are not Medicare rebatable however you may be eligible for a private health fund rebate depending on your health fund policy. Please contact your private health fund for information regarding private health rebates for psychology.

To book an appointment with one of our psychologists, please contact our practice and our friendly client support team will assist you in scheduling a convenient time.

Once your appointment is booked, you will receive a welcome pack via your nominated email address which includes important electronic documents consisting of a consent to therapy form, client information form, telehealth consent form and a mood screener. We kindly ask that you electronically complete and submit these forms prior to your first session. If you are unable to do so, please arrive to your initial session 10 minutes early to complete these forms in person.

Prior to your booked appointment time and date, our client support team will send out confirmation texts to your nominated phone number, including the date and time of your scheduled appointment. We ask you to please check the time and date in the text and please respond to confirm your attendance.

Please allow 60 minutes for your initial session and 50 minutes for ongoing sessions.

Our psychologists strive to run on time to respect your schedule. However, on rare occasions, unforeseen circumstances may cause delays. Should this occur, our practice staff will notify you as early as possible to minimise any inconvenience.

For all appointments, confirmation text messages will be sent out in advance. If you are unable to attend, we kindly ask that you contact the Practice as soon as possible to reschedule. Kincumber Psychology Practice upholds a clear Cancellation Policy which is provided to all clients in their welcome pack emailed prior to the first appointment and within the signed client consent forms.

Please note that cancellations made within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment will incur a cancellation fee equal to the full cost of the session. This fee is not eligible for Medicare rebates and is not covered by third parties such as Workers’ Compensation insurers. Additionally, future appointments will only be scheduled once any outstanding cancellation fees have been settled. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us provide the most effective care to all of our valued clients.

Yes, all information shared during your sessions and with our practice is treated with the highest level of confidentiality, in line with professional ethical standards and legal requirements.

There are, however, specific circumstances in which this may be affected. These include situations where:

  • There is a serious and immediate risk of harm to yourself or others
  • There are concerns relating to the safety or wellbeing of a child or vulnerable person
  • Information is required by law, such as through a subpoena or court order

Your psychologist will discuss these limits to confidentiality with you at your initial appointment and if you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to raise them at any time throughout your treatment.

The number of sessions required varies for each individual and depends on your specific goals, concerns, and the nature of the difficulties you’re experiencing. Some clients benefit from short-term, focused support over a few sessions, while others may find ongoing therapy helpful for more complex or long-standing issues. Your psychologist will work collaboratively with you to develop a personalised treatment plan and regularly review your progress to ensure therapy continues to meet your needs.

Provisional Psychologist – A provisional psychologist is in the final stages of their professional training. They have completed an accredited undergraduate and postgraduate qualification in psychology and are undertaking a supervised practice program to gain full registration providing therapy under supervision.

Registered Psychologist A registered psychologist has completed all required training and supervision and holds general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. They are qualified to independently assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of mental health concerns using evidence-based interventions.

Clinical Psychologist A clinical psychologist is a registered psychologist who has completed additional postgraduate training and is endorsed by the Psychology Board as having specialist skills in the assessment and treatment of more complex mental health presentations.

Each type of psychologist brings valuable skills and knowledge to the therapeutic process, and at our practice, all of our psychologists, whether provisional, registered, or clinical, are committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based care. If you are unsure as to which type of psychologist is right for your needs, please contact our practice and our helpful client support team will be happy to guide you through this process.
